Is it true?
Is it kind?
Is it necessary?
These are the self-reflective questions that our classroom community has begun to incorporate into our vocabulary. The elementary age child is developmentally primed to ask him or herself these questions. Each question, whether directed internally or externally, guides the child to connect with reality in a compassionate way. This new community practice of reflection is contributing to the children's growing ability to balance the needs of the individual with the needs of the group. We have also begun our never ending exploration of the Fundamental Needs of Humans and the various ways in which humans satisfy those needs throughout time and space. Our community discussions are such a joy to witness!
Ashley, Pat, Kristen and I were able to read and discuss the article below. We were able to discuss specifically how to best support our children in the development of their own Elementary 'society'. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
